Apply to end your tenancy

Leaving your home and ending your tenancy

You must tell the Housing Department in writing at least four weeks before you want to leave your home.

This four week notice time must end on a Monday and you must return your keys to the Council Offices no later than 12 noon on the day your tenancy ends.

You must allow the Council access to your home to carry out an inspection of the property prior to you vacating. This inspection will identify any damage or alterations which are your responsibility to repair or replace. If you fail to carry out any repairs or replacement before moving out you will be charged the full cost of any works we need to carry out.

You must leave the property, the fixtures and any furnishings we have provided in good condition when you go. Do not leave any rubbish or belongings behind including any carpets or floor coverings, including laminate flooring. Your loft, garden and shed must also be cleared. We will dispose of any goods you leave behind and you will be charged for the cost of clearing the premises.

You must pay for repair or replacement if damage has been caused accidentally, deliberately or by your own neglect.

You must not leave anybody else living in your home when you move out.

You will not be given another council home in the future if:

  • You have been evicted.
  • You have abandoned your home (left without returning the keys).
  • You still owe rent.
  • You have been involved in serious anti-social behaviour.
  • You left the home in poor condition and have not paid for repair or replacement.

Please read our Tenancy Conditions which set out your rights and responsibilities as a tenant.
