Most residents impacted by road collapse able to return home
In February, the road collapsed on Godstone High Street opening up large holes and forcing 30 properties to be evacuated, as well as some businesses to close. Six of these households returned home after a few days.
Following extensive testing and assessment of the buildings and surrounding areas, the District Council and Surrey Highways are confident it is now safe for all households, except four, to return home from this weekend.
Last night a meeting was held with the residents to update them about the ongoing works and let them know when they can return home.
Further investigations and work on the road need to take place before the remaining few households can return.
All businesses, except for one directly impacted by the road collapse, are open for business as usual.
Surrey County Council’s Highways Team is working with other specialists to investigate the cause of the collapse and to design and plan the required repairs to the road, which is likely to take several months.
Councillor Catherine Sayer, Leader of the Council, said: “It is great news that almost all households are now able to return home. This has been a difficult and stressful time for them and our priority has been to ensure they receive the support they need. We thank them for their patience and co-operation, as we continue work to resolve the situation.
And very importantly, just a reminder that Godstone is very much open for business so please do visit and support the businesses here.”
The response is being led by Tandridge District Council, with ongoing support from the Surrey Local Resilience Forum.
