Statement about Godstone sinkhole
The development of a sinkhole in Godstone has been declared a Major Incident by local agencies in Surrey. In response, all member agencies of the Surrey Local Resilience Forum are providing support including Tandridge District Council, with Surrey County Council leading the coordination efforts.
We are actively supporting residents and businesses affected by this incident.
An Information Centre has been established at St Nicholas Youth Centre, Godstone and will be open on:
- Thursday 20 February, from 10am to 12pm and 2pm and 4pm.
- Friday 21 February from 10am to 12pm.
Our officers, along with Godstone Parish Council, are on hand to provide advice on emergency accommodation and other support.
Around 30 properties have been evacuated as a precaution. Some residents have made their own arrangements for accommodation, while others have contacted us for advice and support. We have also advised residents to contact their insurance companies and are supporting several households in finding somewhere to stay.
We understand there were historical sandpits in the area and our Building Control Team (Southern Building Control Partnership) has visited the site to establish the homes are structurally sound. Further investigations are ongoing.
SES Water has restored water supply to almost all affected properties and other utilities are currently operational.
The road into Godstone from the A25 is closed and we urge everyone to respect road closures and avoid the area.
We are working with our partners to resolve this situation as quickly as possible and planning for the days and weeks ahead to minimise disruption to residents and businesses and help affected households return home as soon as possible.
