Statement about significant incident Godstone sinkhole
The sinkhole in Godstone remains a significant incident and we continue to work closely with our partners to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. The response is now being led by Tandridge District Council, with ongoing support from the Surrey Local Resilience Forum, which includes Surrey County Council and other agencies.
Supporting residents and businesses
The Council’s priority is ensuring residents and businesses receive the support they need during this challenging time. There is an Information Centre at St Nicholas Youth Centre, Bay Lane, Godstone, where affected residents can seek advice and assistance on Friday 10am to 12pm. Those needing further assistance can also call 01883 722000.
By the end of today affected residents will have been contacted to update them about the situation. Five families have been supported with overnight accommodation, with longer term arrangements being put in place.
Work is ongoing to assess whether any properties are safe for residents to return to. Plans are also being put in place to secure the site. Residents will be allowed back by the site contractor to collect essential belongings.
Investigations are continuing to determine the cause of the sinkhole and to establish the full extent of the damage before stabilisation efforts begin. Once the area is stabilised, a repair and reconstruction plan will be developed.
Leader of the Council, Councillor Catherine Sayer, said: “We know this is a really difficult time for those residents who have had to leave their homes and for local businesses which have been impacted. We thank them for their patience and cooperation, as we work to resolve this situation as swiftly and safely as possible.
Please respect the road closures and avoid the area where possible. Please check the Surrey County Council roadworks map for details.
We will provide updates on our website, social media channels and at the information centre.”
