Working at an election

Would you like to earn money, play a key role in our local democracy, and meet lots of people?

We are always looking for new people to help us run elections in Tandridge. If you’re interested in becoming involved, we would love to hear from you.

If successful, prior to taking up your appointment, you must provide evidence of your eligibility to work in the UK by showing us either:

Your valid passport, or

Polling station staff and count staff must consent to working in excess of the normal working hours provided for by the Working Time Directive.

Any work carried out for the elections is subject to the Secrecy Requirements, copies of which will be supplied to all staff.

Rates of Pay

Rates of pay vary depending on the job role and the type of poll – polling station staff are paid a flat rate and verification/count staff, and postal vote staff will be paid an hourly rate.

All fees are subject to tax and will be reviewed regularly.  Mileage allowance will be paid where applicable.

What roles are available?

Each year we have vacancies for a range of roles including working in a polling station, opening postal votes and counting the votes. Full training is provided, and you will be supported by experienced staff.

As part of our annual canvass, we must contact every property in the District to find out if there are any changes to the household. This means we can remove the details of those no longer living there and invite new occupants to register individually. We do this by sending a letter to every household.

Between September and November, we employ canvassers to visit properties that haven’t responded to this letter.

Canvassers are allocated to a specific area of the district to work in. We currently have vacancies across the district.

To be right for this role you will need to:

  • Be honest and trustworthy.
  • Have good communication skills and be able to communicate with customers in a calm, polite, patient and tactful manner.
  • Be able to work in a politically neutral manner.
  • Adhere to strict guidance regarding handling and storing of personal data and confidentiality.

Before you apply, please make sure you have read the role specification.
